Where we are up to

This project is being led by Djirra, in partnership with the Centre for Innovative Justice (CIJ), with the aim of developing preferred model/s for a residential facility for Aboriginal women in contact with the justice system. Due to COVID-19 and increased demand for Djirra’s services, the project was put on hold for a period from late 2021 to early 2022.

The Centre for Innovative Justice (CIJ) has finalised the Women’s Residential Diversion Facility Program Model report.

Djirra are now in the process of securing internal endorsement before submitting to DJCS.

Background

The Aboriginal Justice Caucus and broader community has long expressed the need for a women's residential facility for Aboriginal women in contact with the system to divert further contact with the justice system. Through AJA4, funding has been made available to undertake a feasiblity study which will identify the preferred residential model.
