Where we are up to

Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALO) continue to work in both Parkville and Malmsbury Youth Justice Precincts providing cultural support to our Aboriginal children and young people. This supports the social and emotional wellbeing of young people and keeps them connected to their family, community and culture. Recruitment is currently underway to fill three vacancies within the ALO team.

NAIDOC celebrations were held with young people and their families in Parkville and Malmsbury in July 2022. The weeklong event commenced with the traditional flag hoisting and a morning tea which included young people running the coffee cart. Other events included Aboriginal education programs focusing on the rich history of NAIDOC, cultural activities such as possum-skin burning and making emu feathers, and cultural cooking sessions including damper and kangaroo pizza making. A family BBQ Day was organised as the grand finale to a fun-filled week where Aboriginal young people could celebrate culture and pride, connect with family and community and be strong in their cultural identity.
