Where we are up to
The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) continues to build respect for Aboriginal cultural rights through incorporation within our education training programs, including our Charter Education Program (CEP). The CEP routinely uses scenarios involving Aboriginal rights under the Charter, to aid in developing understanding and experience of applying the rights in a practical context.
Aboriginal cultural rights in youth justice centres was a joint report by VEOHRC and the Commission for Children and Young People (CCYP). Recommendations from the report were accepted by Youth Justice within the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS). Youth Justice provided regular updates on implementation progress directly to VEOHRC and the Commission for Children and Young People (CCYP), with the most recent received in April 2020. To access a copy of the report, visit the VEOHRC website (External link)
VEOHRC made a submission to the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System and intervention into the coronial inquest into the death of Tanya Day, a respected Aboriginal woman. To access findings handed down and published by the Coroner, visit the Coroner's Court of Victoria website.
