Amendments to legislation commenced on 1 October 2019.
Background
Procedures in Victoria require police officers to contact the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service within 60 minutes, or as soon as practicable, of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person being taken into custody for any reason. Legislation needed to be passed by the Victorian Parliament to make this requirement mandatory.
